surprising trend: for years it felt like a substantial fraction of the most impressive tech founders were under 28 or so. in the past few years, very few of them are. what changed?

(i think crypto is part of the story, but definitely not all of it)

I think part of it is that it’s now so easy to get a really cushy job at FAANG or Stripe et al right out of college that pays $400K+ in total comp. In the early 2010’s there just weren’t that many companies hiring, bar was higher, pay was lower, hours were worse.

Nothing. The percentage didn't change, media simply had the opportunity to focus on younger because it was better for engagement entering the digital age (ppl gravitate toward those similar, including age).

New ideas may require specialization in their fields. There will be marginal ideas in previous waves except for web3

Mobile electronic devices are addictive. As in, adults deprived of access to them exhibit clinical signs of withdrawal. And we not only allowed, but encouraged an entire generation of children to embrace this tech starting about 2010 with federally-aided 1–1 programs in schools.

Hypothesis: (1) Internet natives were in their 20s in the 2010s, now they are in their 30s. (2) All else equal, that extra experience matters (for median to median+ outcomes)

Tech billionaires cluster in ages around technology shifts. The last shift was web. Besides Crypto, there hasn’t been a proper one since.

people feel they have less agency on average. the mental obstacles are greater to get to the same starting line. it's not the low-hanging fruit.

The same people who were once 28 grew up and built monopolies which actively prevent younger people from getting a foothold.

Probably it's not the founders under 28 that have decreased, instead more and more older founders have been joining the game, and with their higher expertise in the niche they are building in plus their access to its networks, they have been pretty successful.

Easy tech done? New opportunities require insight/experience?
