i don't get how people can do serious thinking without a quiet environment. i'm pretty happy in any quiet, calm office with natural or very good artificial light, but i struggle to think in loud spaces. i wonder how much people liking WFH is this without realizing it.

Everyone is different. I can’t concentrate in quiet spaces. A busy cafe or bar is ideal. I need background noise to somehow balance out my brain, else it starts wandering.

Wearing headphones just to block noise and people is one my biggest productivity hacks

Loud and engaging spaces might be great for journalist type of jobs perhaps like @Gladwell’s job, but challenging if turning off that ‘engagement’ has a high cost.

Pretty sure people like WFH for many reasons...but 'being able to do serious thinking' is not one of them

I also struggle to do serious thinking without a quiet environment. I've spent a lot of time listening to podcasts though, and I found that when I stopped doing that, my ability to block out external sounds got much better.

Outside places with background noise like hiking, boating, or other activity seems like a similar vibe to focus
