i don't get how people can do serious thinking without a quiet environment. i'm pretty happy in any quiet, calm office with natural or very good artificial light, but i struggle to think in loud spaces. i wonder how much people liking WFH is this without realizing it.

My absolute favorite work environment was when I had a cubicle in a lab. Space for deep focus, proximity to lab mates.

I don't get the draw of going to a coffee shop to do focused thinking work.

Wework are worst places to work due to this reason alone.

This is exactly the case for me. To do IC work I need a quite environment.

Noise pollution is worse than you think: a 10db noise increase (from dishwasher to vacuum) drops productivity by 5%. But YOU DON’T NOTICE: noise hurts your ability to think, not your effort. You work as hard but do worse! And poorer areas have more noise. joshuatdean.com/wp-content/u…

Actually for me the home is where I struggle to get quiet 😂 I have yet to find a consistently quiet space and I’m desperate

Yes and add to it all the motion in the office.

this type of information multiplexing also impacts subsequent recall of information - a quiet env. is ideal not only for encoding (e.g., deep thought) but also for retention of that info (probably when these memories form a life of their own in your brain, creativity emerges)

I feel this. My headphones died yesterday in a coffee shop and it was very difficult to get serious work done.
