i don't get how people can do serious thinking without a quiet environment. i'm pretty happy in any quiet, calm office with natural or very good artificial light, but i struggle to think in loud spaces. i wonder how much people liking WFH is this without realizing it.

They are all pencil pushers. They get 60% of work done, somehow. They are NOT thinking!

This is why I can’t have a serious conversation at most conferences/events - I can’t think/process ideas with background noise.

I heard John Von Neuman did his best work in a very loud chaotic environment. Sometimes noise can be used to drown out errant thoughts and focus the mind. Kanye west is the opposite. Both are geniuses in their own right.

That’s part, but it’s also about flexibility, working around your family’s schedule, being there for your kids’ games, not having to deal with a gut wrenching commute. There are many reasons.

And uninterrupted time. I worked at Microsoft in the mid-90’s. Everyone had an office. Culture was if the door was open, feel free to talk. If it was closed, it’s flow time. Open offices suck.

I prefer noise that I control - I work best with a video on in the background, long form discussion/documentary is best. I don't listen but my brain finds it easier to focus on my work. If I need to SUPER focus I can pause it. Chaotic noise I cannot control is terrible though.
