right now there are many high-skill immigrants that are begging to come to the US and we don't let them some day we'll beg them to come and they won't want to this is an important-but-not-urgent policy disaster, and worse than it seems

Noone wants to be taxed based on being a former green card holder or US citizen! Especially NOT in times of REMOTE work! Less and less super talented people want to come to the US!

I came to US on H4, dependent visa. Packed up bags pretty soon with wife to canada. Have no interest in American immigration now. Why would I?

I live near a Canadian research hub for tech, bio, and informatics. MANY of our leading researchers are from China, India, Germany. They will tell you that they tried for US visas, but couldn’t get them. Canada is correspondingly enriched.

It's happening already.
Completely anecdotal, but hearing from Indian parents that many of their children are choosing to apply to schools in Germany, Netherlands, Singapore, UK and Australia rather than the US.

It is my impression that the government policy of the USA is to encourage the supply of unskilled migrants (from South of the Border) while limiting the supply of high-skilled immigrants ... which depresses the wages of blue-collar folk and inflates the salaries of the elites.

Don't whine please. The global south will have to catch up somehow, and they should be sending their best and brightest to the US only insofar as it's in their best interest, not yours

Well we have millions of jobs available in the US and millions of people out of the work in the US. Maybe those lazy people should take the open jobs? Simple answer rather than farming out the work.
