right now there are many high-skill immigrants that are begging to come to the US and we don't let them some day we'll beg them to come and they won't want to this is an important-but-not-urgent policy disaster, and worse than it seems

Need to emphasize the important but not urgent policy disaster part. It is no politicians best interest to fix something which is not urgent. By the time it's urgent, damage may be irreversible. No politician is going to get extra votes by fixing legal immigration.

It is because our immigration policy is set up to protect high skill, high income jobs while allowing low skilled, lower paid work to be driven down by an influx of low skilled workers.

All the US visa problems are a huge "repellent" for me. (I am no Einstein, just software engineer)

I think this is far more urgent. Regardless of recent impedance, globalization is accelerating faster than policy can keep up with… especially with the ability to work remotely. Every pause is a day where globalization grows and the US gives away tax revenue and brain power

Another idea. Pay for our own citizens to get advanced STEM degrees before educating subsidized foreigners. Student debt from undergraduate studies often precludes our best and brightest from continuing their education. This is a travesty!
