right now there are many high-skill immigrants that are begging to come to the US and we don't let them some day we'll beg them to come and they won't want to this is an important-but-not-urgent policy disaster, and worse than it seems

Sam, How right you are. The only real form of American exceptionalism has been our welcoming #immigration policy. It’s a shame if this falls into the dustbin of history. We must again be a nation of immigrants.

While I 100% support merit based immigration, there's nothing wrong with building the infrastructure to train the people that are already here. Not providing the necessary development and training infrastructure for the people who are here is even more short-sighted.

- Student -> H1B (luck) -> Entrepreneurship via O1 (also some luck) - OR Intercompany transfer - then the same. Either way, you contribute to GDP, get chastised for taking jobs and pursue a night job focusing on immigration paperwork…+- ups & downs of life

Is that why the top h1b company in 2022 is an outsourcing firm? If SV feels so strongly about skilled immigration, it should do sth about outsourcing tech via Infosys/tata/cognizant. Free up h1b, reinforce local tech ecosystem in US.

If they are so wonderful why are they waiting for us? Why beg? Why not just go to UK, Australia, Canada? Where are the famous Google et al. scholarships, internships, fellowships, seats we should have seen established years ago for US students if developing them was a goal?

Anti-immigration sentiment is largely from poorly educated white people who cannot do the high tech jobs wanting highly skilled folks and will not do the very low skill jobs (yard work, meat packing, etc) done mostly by immigrants from the South of US. Racism makes bad economics.
