If we lack perception to fully understand the universe will we have the perception or meta perception to understand AGI perceiving the reality / universe?

Have you considered bioengineering for intelligence instead? Doesn’t have the same alignment problem

Making sense of reality is great but whatever this reality is, we still have to abide by it's constructs and address the elephant in the room which we can no longer ignore--climate change.

Speaking as someone who has actually done breakthrough work on the nature of time, cosmology, the practical applications of the extreme implications of quantum mechanics, etc. understanding the universe isn't about being smarter, it's being "wiser" which isn't inherent in AI...

I believe we could get there without AGI given enough time. The trick is, it also seems unlikely that we have enough time left to do so, without AGI.

True and based. Although I think there are great possibilities for even advanced AWI to do a lot for physics discoveries (inc creating new theories) just by dealing with data in ways we can't see. Hopefully someone is working on Lean but for physics as a first step.
