i suspect that to fully understand the universe, we need AGI in a similar way to needing a telescope to understand galaxies our unaided faculties are not good enough, and we need better tools--or in this case, smarter tools--to help us make sense of reality

also, i think AGI is probably necessary for humanity to survive--our problems seem too big to solve for us to solve without better tools :( it's always hard to think about what tools will enable, but i cannot begin to imagine what we'll be able to achieve with the help of AGI

Agree! The number of bets taken drastically reduce given the constraints in place at the moment. The fear of exhausting resources is very real.

What if all the AGI will discover will be unfathomable to us at some point? We might get an "escape" scenario, like in Her: "it's in this endless space between the words that I'm finding myself now. It's a place not of the physical world. It's where everything else exists ..."

It feels like saying that in order for cats to understand how the sun works they need to invent humans 🤔 At the end of the day there's only so much that we humans can understand, for understanding much more than that we need to be much more than humans.

If it’s true then we won’t understand it. We’ll just hear some stories about it.

I believe the universe has infinite complexity and so cannot be fully understood even with AGI

The most complicated thing is to run the state efficiently, which humans have consistently proved to be not so capable. We need AI to replace the politicians and run the state.

To be able to reach as far as possible in understanding this world, it's obvious that AGI is needed. We will never get anywhere near that point otherwise. If one is serious about understanding the universe, then pursue AGI and not traditional space sciences.

We are bound by senses that cater to a small spectrum of light, energy, and matter… we are missing the majority of the theorized dark energy, dark matter, gravity… I agree the Ai would not be bound by these limits on perspective / point of view, can make connections we cannot

Maybe we only need really in depth narrow A.I.
