i suspect that to fully understand the universe, we need AGI in a similar way to needing a telescope to understand galaxies our unaided faculties are not good enough, and we need better tools--or in this case, smarter tools--to help us make sense of reality

also, i think AGI is probably necessary for humanity to survive--our problems seem too big to solve for us to solve without better tools :( it's always hard to think about what tools will enable, but i cannot begin to imagine what we'll be able to achieve with the help of AGI

Fully perfect laws of physics would describe everything including you making this tweet and me replying to your tweet. We are far off, perhaps looking in the wrong directions.

Does this imply that we need AGI to understand AGI? Answer is yes if an AGI would make scientific or moral discoveries that would change how it operates.

What AGI can help the most is probably to understand our own selves.

In the sense that telescopes aid our eyes to see further, what is the general ability AI will provide us? Aid our minds to see patterns better (tumors, optimize markets, etc)? Aid our ethics to find moral truths better (laws, sentencing, etc)? Or something more specific?

One of the benefits of AGI may be aiding humans to ask better questions. And on that note... is anyone checking the OpenAI fund applications? Or has that task been handballed to GPT-4?

I suspect we will need tools to help create analogous visual representations of the full reality. Just because we know the idea behind the way a plane flies or a clock works, doesn’t mean we can say we understand it. Understanding the nature of our reality will be the grail.

AGI will create knowledge precisely the same way we do. We just won’t have to wait 9 months for each one to be created.

I also think this is true, only for narrow AI, which is great, because I think that’s the only kind of AI, however powerful, that current efforts are going to produce.

To better understand the universe, we need two things (listed by priority): 1. Better questions 2. More processing power, in whatever form is most optimal (Cannot overstate how important the first one is)
