i think in 100 years people will look back at 2022 and be even more astonished at how bad our quality of life was than we are looking back at people who lived 1000 years ago

Alternative scenario: The 1990ies turn out to have been "peak humanity," meaning everything significant is worse after that.

And why is that, what makes you think this thought is worth a tweet?, it’s like tweeting that you have nothing to tweet and what expect that people will comment to make your tweet more interesting?

1000 years is a big call. I'm not sure life has changed that much since the 1950s other than being surrounded by different stuff to distract us. The biggest change in the last 70yrs has probably been western society becoming more socially tolerant.

Why? Just today I ate a bag of broccoli w/ cheese, 180 cal, $1, all I could afford as an undergrad for dinner 20 years ago. Today, we had that plus plenty of other food, wine, an air conditioned house, clean water to drink, a full refrigerator, two paid off cars, a loving family

This is reasonable when one takes the average as a good summary statistic, but I don’t know about the quality of life of the full world population distribution, accounting for the impact of climate change and political regimes on people’s lives

Uh, did you forget about climate change? People are going to look back at awe that we had free water and liveable weather. I truly believe we are currently living at the height of civilization. I have no confidence in any governing body to make the changes that will save us.

there is a wide range of potential outcomes, depending on how the next several years play out … this is an important point:

Those values are under ferocious assault.

Where’s the continued increase in energy and lack of climate change going to come from to make this happen? Everything you see is backed by energy, our empire of overconsumption crumbles once the energy flows stop. Greatly improved nuclear our only hope. The clock is ticking.

Its not the material wealth its the social and spiritual poverty.
