i think worldwide tech salaries may equalize pretty fast--doesn't make sense for companies to pay differently for the same work depending on where people live if everyone is remote anyway--and its going to have some pretty interesting effects

Then Asian economies will impact... Low cost manpower may become costlier and big companies may not move some jobs out of their countries if manpower cost same everywhere.

The part that I think a lot of people are missing is IF remote takes off, are young Americans aware their competition is the global workforce and not just American workforce?

I dont think it will happen THAT fast. There are levels to the game and getting the SAME results at scale is hard. A Hybrid model with US enployees complementing outsourced devs in a nearshore model is a good intermediate step.

Yeah we’re already doing this at @eco. It’s one of the key ways we can hire and retain the best talent.

Upward pressure on pricing as people can access more opportunities beyond their geography. Downward pressure as the market realizes competing on talent is different than competing for geography. "Value" of an employee is not top-line salary. Value = Salary - Cost of Living.

This is 100% going to happen, very curious how long it’ll take. Especially with so many ppl who are plenty fluent in English.

Yes and no. Yes: people are paying for the same work. Generally means pay will trend downwards to what is currently the global mean. No: Pay is also reflective of local circumstances; rents, food, purchasing power. Hence the big Mac index

There has been opportunity in this for years. You can get a designer in the Philippines for $2 an hour. Why pay an American $40/50?

It’s already having some devastating effects for the communities these well paid individuals are going to, that they couldn’t have otherwise without remote work
