i think worldwide tech salaries may equalize pretty fast--doesn't make sense for companies to pay differently for the same work depending on where people live if everyone is remote anyway--and its going to have some pretty interesting effects

I don't think this is how it should be. Different regions have different cost of living and salaries should reflect the parity. If not, it creates an artificial inflation and price rise as (seen in India) the disposable income increases and so does the purchasing power. Hence,

It's going to stimulate more engineers to create their own companies, and introduce a new class of code monkeys, that provide value in a different way.

The inevitable: 1. Most 1st-world countries will make it very difficult to hire remotely from outside. 2. A few small countries will allow it. 3. Corporations that can afford, will move their HQ to those countries. 4. Companies that can't afford the move, can't compete.

So ignore cost of living, taxes, variability? "The same salary" does not mean the same number on the check. It has to include other factors.

The companies are still going to look down on their employees in other countries just because of the economy and currency exchange rate. My relative who works in a top IT firm in India gets paid 1/3 of his colleagues in the US just because their living cost is higher there.

Lots of good comments here. Sounds like HCOL area US tech workers are shooting themselves in the feet by demanding more Remote work flexibility…And instead maybe going back to the office is the better long term protection play…. Fascinating to see how this plays out.

But is it fair that a person is paid 1 house a year in country A and 0.05 house a year in country B?

The reason they won’t: yield management. Just like airlines charge different prices for same seats to extract economic surplus from customers, Employers will pay different wages for same job to extract economic surplus from employees.

Spot on. The future of work is remote. The future of remote is async. Async focuses on contribution vs presence. So if work & performance are going to be based on contribution, why shouldn't how people are paid work the same way. 2 equal contributors should be paid equally.
