that wasnt at all how it went down. Uber tried to get their legislation passed via a public vote and they *lost*

Considering what they spent, "public vote" itself is probably a bit misleading. They tried to buy the public, and failed. They naturally then just bought the politicians, a much cheaper endeavor.
