When did humanity become so damned passive - how have we allowed ourselves to be oppressed by madmen and rabidly self-absorbed clowns?

insular and complacent is the better way to put it. Humans achieve amazing things, but in small pockets and media distracts.

Those are two very good descriptors. I think that there's a self-hatred or just not enough care about the world to choose "amazing"
As a Media Studies student, that paraphrase resounds as a present truth. Yet, evolution requires adaptation.
