Oh that one is easy. I've been far more scared at tech conferences. Absolutely. Scummy neighborhoods, no problem!
People are so full of anger right now - extremism in an effort to diversify in terms of race and gender. Abuse of power positions.
Oh yes. I was so shocked when I came back to work in January to find just how combative things got.

kinda depends where. Eg in airport - sure feel safe. Walking downtown & see crowd in strange city at night - no not safe

So would be by context for you-makes sense. I have felt unsafe only from individuals, never crowds so long as there's a clear exit.
