@mollydotcom The direwolves are proxies for the Stark children. There is one for each child, that's laid out in the *opening* chapter.

@mpesce Agreed. The horror and full emotional engagement is entirely the point of #GoT - at least the HBO version. I haven't read the books.

@mollydotcom It's pretty much just as horrifying in the book. I knew this was coming and fully expected everyone to have a freak about it.
