I sometimes dragged home a Compaq "portable" from work in 90s. Phone line for webz. 56k? No recollection. Recall amber screen.

14.4K in 1995. We subscribed to Compuserve, which cost £3.95 an hour plus 4p/1p per minute for the phonecall.

At the time, CompuServe was a walled garden, but one day I discovered I could connect then open IE to access the full Web. :O

I do remember having to plug my ears or worrying about waking people up because of that annoying modem sound though.

I connected on a coupler modem to the lab at Livermore and played the old ASCII Star Trek game and Adventure.
