The vast uptick in deaths related to illicit drugs is due to dangerous adulterants, mixing drugs like adding Fentanyl to everything, doing too much, driving, engagement in violent crimes, and mixing with legal poisons. Alcohol? Poison. Nicotine? Poison.

Controls for dose and limit of purchase, social support for any substance disorders where compassionate care is safe. Criminal activity equally adjudicated without bias by demographics of economic, racist scale. In the USA, big pharma pays from profits for narcan and treatment.

Opioids and benzos, other highly addictive substances are monitored. You go to a doctor if you use regularly, and you are not criminalized unless a crime is committed. Deal with the fact: Many humans use drugs. And we are not alone. Elephants, certain fish, we are not alone.

No psychoactive drug is biased. People are. Targeting populations, prisons for profit, medications dropped when used for medical reasons abolished all. The war rages on, and it is politicized and more deadly than ever. And ironically, overuse of legal pharmaceuticals kill too.

There is no shame in vulnerability. In fact, it is a strength when met with dignity. Start with reality, add empathy, resources, and true care. Who knows. Maybe the need for self-medication improves and death tolls drop. Or is the goal to control and kill? Cuz that's what we got.
