In some ways I feel sad for web developers that came to the web after 2013. We had a lot of ridiculous technology and the web was mostly a sandbox and boy did we throw sand but we had a lot of optimism even after 9/11. It was a very different era but from 1993 onward it was epic.

I taught classes once upon a long time ago and table-based layouts and how to do them in an accessible way and linearize text and deal with quirks in implementations across browsers it was a long time ago but it seems like yesterday and I miss everything but spacers they sucked

True story Dave Raggett wrote the first specs for tables at w3c and his proposal did in fact have a table-based layouts however not spacer gifts and nested crap. That was around and but it was really popularized by David Siegel who apologized for breaking the web and then left!
