They did so primarily to avoid JavaScript and to some extent the DOM via HTML/CSS. After "Flash" was no longer an option - there was no other choice for many.

Hey there Joseph I think your answers are very compelling and I have to disagree in the context of where I am going with this flash was not a problem. It was an issue no doubt and it didn't comply with the ideas of the web but it wasn't as significant to the thery i'm forming.

Hey Molly. Not saying that Flash itself was a problem but rather that it was a solution to a problem once present - but then when it went away... people still wanted a solution like that and so 1000 new 'solutions' were birthed. Now, chaos.

OMG that's what this is all about. But it's a specific idea and possibly a theory and I'm Gathering as much as I can first. Using some questions in tweets and commentary before I write it up. The description of Flash in your Tweet there was it very good description in general.
