They did so primarily to avoid JavaScript and to some extent the DOM via HTML/CSS. After "Flash" was no longer an option - there was no other choice for many.

PS it occurs to me that your disappointment regarding the web in response to my ask is evidence supporting my theoretical experiment. I might use it if you give me permission after my conclusion which will take a little while.

That would be cool! All started with comments about Lake Mead with water almost less since created. extreme heat alerts and smoke from Wildfire at Kitt Peak. It has important telescopes and and astronomy lab as well as being holy to the the native tribes that live in the area.
