Designers who started in private sector who have transitioned to government work: **What have been the biggest differences you鈥檝e experienced in doing design in government?** (Think: procedure, methods, access, support, technical, schedule/scope, audience, stakes, feels, etc.)

Coming from private sector I expected more inclusive, accessible, & equitable design expertise in the public sector. Instead, I found more concern for shipping quantity > quality. With rare exceptions. Most know nothing of Section 508, but it鈥檚 the law, not just public-facing!

I had the opposite experience. Working for Department of energy and other federal agencies long before good practices were being adopted by anybody dot-dot. they were a joy and most of my federal and state agency clients were among my favorites because of that.

I think the reason things are worse now is because of the dot dot boom sending saviors to #civicTech. People from ad / digital agencies or tech companies aren鈥檛 used to serving the full spectrum of human reality.

That may well be a factor, not my area as I rarely worked with agencies except when hiring then for design work for clients as I am no designer :)

I鈥檓 so glad to hear this! For me, it was particularly VA teams. Certain powerfully positioned individuals were adamantly refusing to meet the minimum 508 reqs, arguing despite the 508 Office informing them. I think it鈥檚 worse in the #civicTech boom than it was in our days.

Thankfully, folks in a different sector have been nothing but receptive and enthusiastic lately. There are some powerfully placed individuals who won鈥檛 follow the law. I wish there was more accountability.
