HTML in 2021? programming. Otherwise, we'd have an open web stack, XHTML 2.0+ browsers that supported application/xhtml+xml. We do not build sites in a distributed linguistic way. We build apps for devices and downloadable desktop apps. Browsers might as well be OSs. Oh wait.

Been thinking about this all day. I am satisfied that HTTP(S) and RESTful design (HATEOAS) are simply enabling new application development that endures only by popular acceptance. A good URL scheme is a delight to hack by segments (ie, linguistic awareness). All else is extras.

More thinking: HTML gets to be both the retrieved resource or collection (the part inside <main>) and the template for the "everything else". I gave up hoping that HTML could be semantic for its message, other than by domain-specific metadata. Servers/browsers are the only logic?

HTML was never meant to be functional rather to evolve as a markup language used in tandem as the semantic piece of an openstack distributed system. That is not a framework that is not JavaScript that is not HTML that is not the web as it was meant to be.
