Sir Tim Berners-Lee is selling the first web browser’s code as an #NFT! This is curious... And uncomfortable somehow. Thoughts? theverge.com/2021/6/15/22535…

NFTs wouldn't even exist without the WWW, so why shouldn't he reap the rewards.

He is free to do what he likes. I just feel it's a strange move that is antithetical to the open web he envisioned.

Yes, it is. But the open web and advocacy thereof has disintegrated. For me, it's caused deep disillusionment and I've seen the same reflected in our industry. There is pushback (Mozilla's move to social activism for example) but Net Worth > Meaningful Work. In Jersey speak? FTS!

NFTs should be cured, not curated. "Hey, let's destroy the environment so some tech bro* can say that he* has The Official First Web Browser Code™!" * It's going to be a guy, you know it is.

Odd are it will be, and they'll be a person with "Net Worth" who made money off the free and open Web Sir Tim offered the world. Feels wrong and definitely an unexpected move.
