How do you explain what open source is to non developer types? Trying to come up with the Grandma / relative friendly way to describe what I do that’s more involved than the usual ‘He works on ‘tinternet and that’ which is how she currently describes my chosen occupation.

it’s like grandma sharing her book of recipes to other relatives and friends, which some folks take those original recipes and remix them to their liking, and continue to share them with friends… that’s the best I’ve been able to come up with

Why is it grandma? It's ageist, sexist, narrow thinking. Who the heck do we think was part of the emergence of Open Source in the first place? Not youth not anymore. We need to think how it is disrespectful and antithetical to all open, universal and inclusive design principles.
