While I've had a lifetime of negation re my scholarly topics (STEM) it's only the last few years I've heard truly ugly comments from a few men but from far more women about scholarship and higher ed for women. Anyone else experiencing this? Why from so many women do you think?

I’ve heard much anti ‘birther’ comments from women in STEM (Eg waste of a PhD scholarship if woman gets pregnant during/near end of training. Heard it from men.... but more from women.

Is it projection of self-hatred and/or envy? Or are the. women doing this feeling the permission from extremist "leaders to say what they always silently thought? Many women in my life fought topics (STEM) but only derided interest in scholarly pursuits out loud in recent years.

One example from a woman: "Why do you care about education when you can put on a cute outfit, makeup and stop using 10 dollar words or talking about crap people don't care about. You're a widow and attractive if you work it. Shut up and find a man. Take him for all he's worth."

Some women said I should stop learning and start looking for a husband instead. Many Asian women are taught that getting married and having children is an obligation. When they see a woman who follows unconventional life path, they feel uncomfortable

Yes, same for my culture but education is still a core value for many Jews, and many Asians as well along with the marry/make more humans convention. I had hoped we'd see less, not more, judgement by now especially in cultures where learning is valued.

I believe all that factors in, but the rise of anti-intellectualism, gender bias and embracing of willfull ignorance do too - I never heard such things, I'm 58.

Culture to my way of thinking is the strongest influence of all. Whether cultural origin or cultural issues within work, home, faith, etc or all combined, I say yes. And, current culture globally is hateful and outspokenly so. To your experience? Formal education != proficiency,
