For me the first step was a shift in perspective: accepting that I'm not inherently 'better' than others. Then constant reminders to self: listen, let/help them speak, imagine myself in their situation, what would I do?
I do all that already. TOO MUCH.
I will give everything away before I even think of myself. My mother had funny nicknames like "Lady Bountiful" and of *course* "Miss Sensitivity" She also pointed that out I always took blame even when I wasn't culpable. I like others to be ok.
