Recalling a period in the 80's when orange was supposedly the safest color for a car; a colleague bought a bright orange van. Looked ridiculous

That actually goes against everything we know about color here in the US at least. Red and yellow cars are the most dangerous. Orange can't be far behind. Too distracting. And get pulled over more than standard colored cars! Wild.
