We tend to forget how advanced IE for both Windows and Mac when they still made it was in fact the first to implement #CSS (IE 3) and while we suffered IE 6 lasted a long time despite the problems with interop. Sad to see #IE and #Edge go and #Chrome monoculture emerge. We tried!
Web development's reaction to Microsoft abandoning EdgeHTML is basically "we hated your browser but please don't stop making it".

So true — my thoughts were similar on hearing the news, too — thanks to all of you who worked at /with Microsoft to move the web standards movement forward

Exactly what I was thinking. It's been quite a journey!

IE 5.2.3 for Mac also had support for Javascript (was called Active Content)

Yeah, it was grueling and Web Standards Project worked alongside others to help. I pissed off a few Microsoft folks and argued with Bill Gates F2F to fix IE 6. I think he liked being challenged. The two women in the room, me and the lovely Kelly @gotomedia were invited back.
