one of my first big projects had a contractual requirement for section 508 compliance. in addition to making everything accessible, it made the UI so much 1) cheaper to build and maintain and 2) a far more straightforward UX

this was before HTML5 which obv *greatly* improved things thanks to the work of @mholzschlag and others. ugh but those battles with product owners over date pickers

we had a blind user during that project tell us that before our app she had to call a coworker to come over and type their SSN into a form field because it was one of those made-up controls. making the web accessible had real impact on people's lives
