Robin, you are not alone. Many people tell me this, and I myself suffered a massive identity crisis that was in part due to this deep, dark guilt of what we did or failed to do. I shifted as Covid set in worldwide. We're scaling to meet needs unimagined. I want to help with that.

HELLO ALEX...a voice I think would be very relevant in this conversation indeed.
THAT is an inspirational point indeed, Tim. I think that we scaled to manage healthcare, education and infrastructure at least in "developed" nations as we go through a massive global pandemic is a nod to what we are doing right, even if the quality assurance is lacking. :D

One thing that helps me with my aversion to JS and the framework/api uber alles era of webdev has been to see these things for what they are - tools. The real challenge is to figure out ways to use these tools, or NOT use these tools in a given project. It's a one size fits none.

So my thought about that is to not frame these things anymore as conflict or complaint. We are now the elders of a generation as we come up on 30 years. We have voices of experience, perhaps even some wisdom. Let us share them if we feel so inspired as a tool of learning for all.

Yes, please and thank you! Expand the story. That is my ask, but it is surely proving a painful and difficult journey to embark on. Aren't those the most important ones, however? Perhaps they aren't, but I do feel we need some unity lest the entire dream disappear altogether.

The point is to go beyond ME. This is not about me, but it includes me. Whether people realize it or not, it was a brutal experience that nearly cost me my life in the end and it caused many people distress. My value system says learn from history not repeat it. THAT is the goal.

Mmm, it might be framing it around one meeting between wasp and MS. Gave me pause certainly. I wasn’t there so what could I add? At that time I was building websites, not building browsers or standards. If the call is “tell me what you were up to” that wasn’t entire clear.

Thanks James, I too am exceptionally grateful for the work of a world of wide thinking folks who bonded in a community so wide and true - I miss that, and I think the loss of that unity in the noise of the last decade has hurt us and our world. I just want to help somehow. DM!
To wrap up and reinvigorate the point, folks who worked on the Web between 1993 and 2009 are especially welcome to ping me if interested in expanding the conversation and community of activism in #webdev #webdesign #UX #a11y and all related fields, let me know! Thank you xo/m

Finally, there's what I'm calling the "frozen" camp, where a hand goes up, I send the materials, and there's no follow up response. This I worry is in part my words and snark coloring things, as well as a legit concern to protect families, jobs and so on. Understood. Completely.

That camp of "leave the #browser wars" era and the fight for #standards much less the community that was fostered across the globe also thinks this is a combative message because I can be combative. Nothing. Is. Further. From. The. Truth. It is learning I seek. NOTconflict.

A third camp of response is very disappointing to me and I fear perhaps it is my framing of the challenge and the topic of the time that's causing confusion. The pushback is "that will just unbury the dead" where we choose to not revisit our history as it can be painful and dark.

The second camp when we look at #browser wars and the #WebStandards #Standards #WebStandardsProject era of focused action is "I wasn't on the inside, so I have no voice." This confounds me as it is the expansion away from my incessant voice to be INCLUSIVE of many voices! Speak!

Responders have fallen into several camps. The first are the people who immediately see an opportunity to share their experiences. This is of course the delightful part, where I see passion for such topics alive and well but living isolated, without a community focus.

The goal of my ask was to see who would pop up out of curiosity or passion or interest in that time to help me expand my own thinking beyond the experience of having been engaged in a very complex series of engagements withThe Web Standards Project and our various task forces.

After a day or so of having asked for input from #webdev #webdesign #UX #a11y and other folks who were working and participating during our emergence in terms of #WebStandards and #OpenWeb I'm rather overwhelmed with the strange and unexpected results. This thread will clarify.

That's pretty darned exemplary of the era alrighty. Even better would have been to fail to properly nest the elements and added color, size and font types to the font element lol! Epic. I need DM access or yer email to send you the "task" :)

When you see your DM and read the challenge, you're gonna see just why I splorched coffee across the desk LOL. Brilliantly funny in context and out of it too ;-)
