I've wanted to address this issue for a long time but haven't been up to article writing. I am working on creative stuff again.

I tend to like writing short form these days for pro stuff (I tire easily) but can write long form in social conversations like this or on FB. I don't see it as writer's block rather a shift in how I approach writing these days.

I start with Cascade, Inheritance and Specificity. It is for folks who know selectors and some CSS, but I keep it as simple as possible code-wise as I'm focusing on the technology of the browser which is where the real technical aspects of specificity and browser engine meet.

I was doing 140 character focused tweets with an image which is kind of cool because recycling them gets nuances across. I have a "CSS for Developers" presentation I did for a conference. It needs dusting off and updating, I could do that on video? What do you think?

It was getting no traction, but it was during a less active time for me. I would absolutely be grateful for any spread like butter. We need all the tools, and we need to use them well. There's a reason a hammer has a long handle. :)

Also, there is no one right way. That's definitely problematic for everyone. The best way to handle that IMO is to remember Occam's Razor. One person who is utterly brilliant at figuring out "best ways" is @meyerweb - he troubleshot a CSS problem at AOL. I don't think that way.

Gonna update that this week or so and make it available for all who care, but I'm stepping through the entire cascade because the two are bound and this has to be understood, which it isn't.

I started doing this a year or two ago and no one really paid attention (well, @fantasi did and clarified some of my language). So it was beneficial for me but it just didn't take at that point. I have a presentation here from 2005 "CSS for Developers" - just at the rise of apps.

Too much focus in the last years on performance over quality browser development and the nuances that exist between them. I made an entire career on the subject! And it feels crappy because we didn't keep at it after 2015 and the rise of frameworks. I'm going to do a mini-series.

People still think Web design and development is easy. CSS and SVG are not easy at all. Neither is Javascript. I have talked with JS-first devs who, upon learning a little bit about CSS, get more excited. It's declarative but CSS demands understanding of how browsers work.

I've been thinking a lot about this issue today and don't think it's an issue of anti-css but what is fast and easy. An example is encouraging inline CSS, or cheating with a !important without knowing where a conflict is, causing potentially more conflicts down the road ...

I know. There really aren't words for that kind of cognitive dissonance.

I just feel sad that even though we have common ground in education and had an interesting discussion that I can't trust her or anyone who supports a maniac because they are not logical or rational in the end, even if they pretend to be.

My father and his side of the family were all teamsters (and the jewish branch of the New York Mafia) and Mom was AFL-CIO. Union and labor all the way.

I wanted to smack her but I made nice. I live here after all.

I believe it's Africa, Asia and Northern Europe. Most westerners have some African or Middle Eastern genetic influences.

When I was growing up there were a lot more union-oriented folks who tended toward social democrats in the North East. I cannot believe what happened. I can now happily blame Giuliani who is really showing his true colors these days.

So the punchline is this blue-blooded school teacher with a real education asked me my background. I answered "up from Africa"and she looked at me and said you're a Jew. It makes sense now." This was a teacher of children? No wonder we're broken.
