As the child grows, the languages, signs and symbols that are the core of her identity clash with the dominant context in which she lives.

A child grows up in a society of many cultures. Yet one culture dominates, and the other cultures are sidelined. How does he or she feel?

Web folks are into semantics. Well, I encourage you look into semiotics - the study of sign process and meaning. Context changes meaning.

Truly sorry for speaking out for a minority view. So nice to know that doing so still results in social ostracization and ridicule.

Do you want a world where we all agree, eat the same food, speak the same language acknowledge the same beliefs? Go for it!

@ondragebauer I KNOW! But others claim he's been co-opted by the US and has become a capitalist symbol.

So if Santa is an American Capitalist, wouldn't my disagreement about his significance still bear weight?

@addy_osmani Not amongst observant Jews. I'm sure many Muslims and others from diverse religious backgrounds would agree with me.

I'm not going to argue about this. God forbid I should be accused of ruining the Christmas Spirit after 49 years of being told what it is.

Santa is equated with Christmas in the US. No matter the origins, the semiotics are clear. Is Santa lighting the menorah at your synagogue?

"Santa Claus is not a symbol of religion" is as ignorant a statement as a man saying "I'm a lesbian because I want sex with women"

God forbid a Jew should point out that Santa Claus does have religious symbolism attached whether the rest of you believe it or not.

So you're saying I should just let Santa into my heart. Because you know, he's not related to religion anymore.
