Working for Opera was a great experience in learning about the realities of building browsers for as many OSs, devices, etc. you can imagine

Yes, context changes. The fundamental information, functionality should not. This is why responsive design is a great concept.

People do say that about walled gardens - that we will route around them. But the app-by-platform craze has me nervous.

This is why I've given my life to this industry - quite seriously. The Web aids in better distribution of resources and info.

I'm not sure what you're saying re: devices and WebKit. Why are we even thinking about browsers as device-specific apps?

And do we not work hard to advocate for those things to continue to be free or low-cost, clean and accessible to all people?

If we end up going to device-only browsers, don't we break the Web and create an entirely platform-specific medium?

I think the key word (back to the penis fight issue) you used there is "commodities" - The Web was meant to be free.

Yes, there is context. That is a key issue for designers and developers, absolutely.

The Web transcends devices. Always was meant as such. I can run Opera on hundreds of OSs. HUNDREDS.

I hate that. I just have to fight it, my core values are completely against the walled gardens.

the whole point is that we're NOT a device-based browser. We make Web browsers and they go on many devices.

One of the reasons Opera's browsers remain nearly ubiquitous in mobile and device browsing is due to cross-platform development.
