The DOCTYPE switch is a relatively late use of DOCTYPE, and in its truest essence, we can look at this switching mechanism as a hack.

The DOCTYPE switch came about when two box models co-existed in IE, and a means of empowering authors to choose was attached to the DOCTYPE.

In validation, DOCTYPE's role is to allow the validator to compare your declared document with the related DTD and provide results.

DOCTYPE was originally a passive means of declaring document type, eventually tied to Document Type Definitions.

The DOCTYPE is a declaration whose syntax is derived directly from SGML. It is NOT HTML. It is also not XHTML.

So if DOCTYPE isn't an element, what is it?

True or False: The DOCTYPE is an HTML element whose purpose is to switch browsers from quirks to standards mode.

Entertainment is always available. Pick up a musical instrument-make one out of branches. Preventing access to knowledge oppresses humanity.

@aral "optimized" - does that mean equivalents are also available? The business world now thinks there's only iOS and maybe Android.

The grand irony is that more poor people have televisions than food in this world. Talk about oppression through platform! /cc @aral
