@PaulLomax @jearle Isn't that the scenario that you're saying iPhone has helped break up in the UK? If so, would LOVE to see that here, too.

@PaulLomax @jearle I can't get an iPhone on my carrier. I can get Android, Blackberry, Windows, etc. To get an iPhone, I have to go to AT&T.

@gsnedders @soypunk Hmm, "vendors" - I'm not so sure. In terms of pragmatic applications, large scale sites gain big #wins with standards.

@PaulLomax @jearle My point is that here, it still does. So it's not an argument. We're just looking for a point of clarity here, I think :)

The fabulous @MJ is coming to see me. I am a most happy camper! :: dances round the room ::

@soypunk Oh I know you did. It just gets a little slippery there for me. I easily go on rants that ake me into some dangerous places ;)

@jearle That's very interesting. I'd not heard that. How don't you "own" an iPhone *or* an Android? I'm pretty sure the carrier wins both.
@soypunk I think in fairness to both Opera and W3C, I'll opt out of this publicly. I'm a representative of both, my opinions are mine.
@soypunk That's very sweet, Shawn, but honestly @Opera is not the only org keeping the @w3c relevant. Many companies and orgs are involved.
@soypunk Good question. I can't answer for TBL! I can only answer for Mols. And while my opinions are strong, they aren't immutable.

@jearle I'd like to stats on that. Most people in the US on iPhones pay ONE carrier. Android is on many. I truly don't understand your point

@soypunk Hyperlinking is in fact still the core of what we do whether it be sites or apps. That was the history lesson, methinks.
@soypunk why can't those just evolve from existing URI schemes, or worked through via W3C? That's the fragmentation point, I think.

@jearle I'm saying that there's incredible lock-in to providers in the US still. Just for some context, I'm 48. Old dial phones FTW! ;)

@jorgehurtado It is beautiful. I don't get there very often. In fact, I think that was the farthest north in CA I've been! I live in Tucson.

@jearle That's a great point for UK users then. Here in the US, the carrier issue persists. So again, the *world* part of the ideal is amiss

@soypunk URIs that connect to no content is pretty irrelevant, dontcha think? ;)

Instead of "Embrace, Enhance, Eliminate" how about a new creed? Embrace, Enhance, Evolve! /@Eridanus

@jearle Help me see it. Who do you pay for your phone service in the US? The US carrier problem is a US-centric problem. Not World WIDE Web.
