Heavens to Murgatroyd! Does Opera support SVG? Longest and most complete support than in any other browser :) /

web devs are more part of software engineering than ever, particularly as HTML5 and related APIs blows wide open, and browsers strengthen.

As for learning curves, front end web dev in general is becoming far more complicated as we move from "document" to "application" mentality.

The learning curve for SVG is high, no doubt. But <canvas> demands some serious JS chops. So either way we go . . .

it's on the way IN. IE9 is implementing SVG 1.1 (how much we'll see as it unfolds). This will mean far more opportunity to use SVG.

Not for me. <canvas> will be very useful, but again - just another tool in our wizard's bag. /

IE9 will be a game-changing browser for numerous reasons, but a big one is that aspects of SVG will now be possible to use far more readily.

One of the reasons gradients is a lower priority in the CSS charter and spec is because of SVG - a far more powerful (and stable) spec.

That last tweet from me showed SVG in HTML5 - right in the document to achieve an inline vector drawing without <canvas>

SVG can be written directly into HTML5 and served as text/html for those browsers with SVG support, which will include IE9 /

There's the Template module, grid layout, flexbox, multicol - but for real layout, template and grid are still nascent /

I rarely recommend them. They won't scale to future techniques - that's another problem. But for certain situations, useful.

haha, I know that. Actually, we've wrapped for this quarter. It's not like the group isn't working. It's a very difficult problem.

Of course we know that now, and we know the risks of using them for layout. But they remain the only true grid construct.
