xref can be found in XML apps, @donotthink - for example, Docbook, Autocad has xref support, etc.
HTML5 minimalism @mgirouard ? Ideologically, perhaps. In reality, HTML5 apps and examples are usually bloated, messy and not accessible.

@Rich_Clark Reflections are not part of any W3C CSS3 module although the feature will be added somewhere at some point, I imagine.
That was XHTML 2.0. @TopherMade. Currently, href is used in HTML5 on the anchor and area elements.
