What is a web designer anyway?
2
Oh for Fuck's Sake. OF COURSE I agree knowledge is critical. How can anyone who knows me or my work think for a second I don't?
Regarding the term "code" @ara_p - this is what I was implying. The use of that term for markup and CSS pisses off a lot of people.

No worries, @mattbeck - you called me on a perspective and I gave it a thought and realized you had a point. This is how we grow "wide" :D
Replying to @mattbeck
@mattbeck I'm going to skip over justifications and heartily agree. "Lots of room for us all"
What others who don't know me might find surprising is I was saying "know the code" ten years ago. It's a different Web now.
Replying to @mattbeck
@mattbeck Actually I take it back. You're right. It's an absolutely arrogant statement. And I'm standing by it.
Replying to @BoxedinDesign
@BoxedinDesign alas, no beer here. Just me and some tea. And frog pajamas (in France :: giggle ::)
Replying to @mattbeck
@mattbeck "It appears" does not mean "I know" - arrogance implies certainty in one's theory, I did not say I was right, only what I think.
Now I'm really really hungry but it's past 2a.m. and I'm in my pj's. Will have tea instead and ponder the true definition of "code"
RT @CozyCabbage "Real Paris chefs cook food that tastes amazing. Always have, always will." Love it.
Enough! Let's talk about food. I'm in Paris. My god, I ate some cheese at breakfast this morning that was so delicious I wept.
Replying to @cssquirrel
@cssquirrel Bless my pals at AEA but the entire comment is bait or a very misguided statement to make on the brink of 2010.
Replying to @ramonpage
@ramonpage yes it most certainly is a balance.
Oh my. @jordangray, if I am teaching float clearing in 10 years, shoot me. In FIVE years. Good lord, in 2. Just shoot me.

Unfortunately, it appears the agency mentality is a little out of touch with the current Web. Agency work is a minority area these days.

I think there are two schools here. One: small teams or agencies. Two: Large web sites and sophisticated web applications. Different needs.
1
Ah,@aral - there's a term we need to speak of more "interaction design" - especially in light of the rise of a rich, interactive Web.
1
@aral It's more than just UX designers, no? To create a great web site or app, a holistic approach is necessary, full stop.
