Dear Mom, oh, the web page looks funny? Just rewrite the document to include a meta element and try a variety of IE versions. Easy peasy.

I mean, with mode switches from IE 5.5 all the way through IE8 Standards, how could IE8 NOT be most compatible with all sites?
