Deep thought: If I'm not optimistic about web standards, why do I keep fighting for them? Keeping the makers of Prozac in business?

@dougoftheabaci what a wonderful world that would be. This is why I am an *idealist* but not an optimist when it comes to web standards.
I wish it didn't have to be about companies, and the good people that work for them. But it ends up that way. It makes me very sad, really.
the point I'm really making is that this is about standards, not about a given company per se. Did I once write "Just use Opera?" :P

@LeBomba The size of a city in Washington state, I imagine. ;)
I am the round hole that no square peg can fit.

I lost 10 followers over that last holy war. Was it because I dropped an "f" bomb? Wrote what was on my mind? Me? Miss Subtle? Can't be!
Actually, I'm not confused. I just have an opinion about what the truth is that would leave me even more hated than this last week's fiasco.

@elpie this is why I've been so upset this week. I don't want to inadvertently mislead over IE8 compatibility either. I AM CONFUSED.

@xico_nunes yes, in *IE8 standards mode* IE8's CSS compliance and other features are extremely impressive, all told.
Any versioning methodology is antithetical to the core vision of the Web, which is meant to be browser and platform agnostic. Or was. Sigh.
However, the lack of understanding re compat among developers is exactly what I want to bring to the attention of eyes that are watching.
So Mols will step away from the specific issue of IE8 and compat modes and just say that I hope to have some clarification this coming week.
Again, I'm waiting on some good people at MS to walk me through the entire process, because apparently I fucked up explaining it but good.

@dustinwilson Will it ensure IE8 rendering? Yes, having the meta there will do so. Is it a good idea to use it? This is the real question.
@WikiLeon No, XHTML isn't in use in most instances, because there's a browser that never implemented the means by which to send it as XML.

@xico_nunes In *MY OPINION* the entire conversation with IE has been deteriorating since some internal changes last year.

@JudsonCollier of course you should. That's how we learn. Part of wisdom is realizing how little we ALL can ever know.
In a nutshell: The message folks like myself have been giving is not accurate according to Microsoft, who are working to clarify that asap.
Replying to @judson
@JudsonCollier I'm wondering too. I want to talk in detail about what went on this week but can't 'til more clarification from MS occurs.
