The debt ceiling deal was a negotiation with economic terrorists. It protects those who do not need protection - who if anything should be held more accountable - and it inflicts harm on people who are most vulnerable. Also, it had nothing to do with fiscal responsibility. If McCarthy had really been about fiscal responsibility, he would’ve been open to cutting the military budget as well as letting Biden spend money on IRS agents who would’ve caught wealthy tax cheaters. Situations like this just keep moving the Overton window further and further away from a “government of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

Memorial Day should be a mindful, not a mindless holiday. Let's grieve, and let's also imagine a world in which war will be no more. A MINDFUL MEMORIAL DAY open.substack.com/pub/marian…

I’ve never excluded UBI. I said that last time, and this time. It does not correct the fundamental flaws of hypercapitalism, but as a stopgap measure (perhaps two to five years?) while the ship is being righted and economic justice is being re-introduced into the system, I think it’s good.

It is both. We are a democratic republic. It’s like saying we have doors, and we have windows too.

“Democracy in order to live must become a positive force in the daily lives of its people. It must make men and women whose devotion it seeks, feel that it really cares for the security of every individual; that it is tolerant enough to inspire an essential unity among its citizens; and that it is militant enough to maintain liberty against social oppression at home and against military aggression abroad.” - FDR

McCarthy’s GOP continues its war on the poor, bolstering food insecurity, protecting tax loopholes for the very rich, and bolstering a corrupt and overbloated defense establishment.
The Republicans holding the entire world economy hostage unless they get what they want has been an outrageous display of extremist politics.

“The project could result in as many as five, two-mile-long crude-oil trains running over 100 miles directly alongside the headwaters of the Colorado River each day.” *And* they want tax breaks!

Cop City is one of the worst ideas to come out of the police industrial complex for a long time. It’s the template for a police state, fostering separation between police and the communities they’re here to serve. It’s the last thing we need now. theguardian.com/us-news/2023…
