From Florida to Texas to New York, from Arkansas to Iowa to South Carolina, all around this country an authoritarian energy is gathering force and gaining ground. In Florida they are banning books. In Texas they are arresting parents for trying to ensure that others won’t lose their children in mass shootings the way they did. In New York they are arresting peaceful protesters. In Arkansas and Iowa they are gutting child labor laws. In South Carolina 21 legislators signed on to a bill that would execute women who had abortions. My hope is that this is simply a fever that will pass, much like McCarthyism in the 1950s. But we can’t be sure of that. All people of goodwill - on the left and on the right - have a responsibility now. We need to respond to this moment with a rededication to what freedom means, and a willingness to stand strong for it in every way that we can.

Putin’s talking points are no better than neocon lies. I see through both.

McCarthy using the debt ceiling to try to hold the government hostage is particularly galling. Rather than take any responsibility for their huge tax cuts for the very wealthy, plus foreign wars that should never have been fought and obscenely wasteful military spending, the GOP wants to take aim at the average American’s pocketbook in order to fix the problem. They have no idea where money comes from. That which stimulates people’s productivity and creativity - from education to healthcare to culture to a healthy environment - stimulates the economy. That which depresses people - from lack of access to education or healthcare, an unhealthy environment and lack of economic opportunity - then depresses the economy. The same people who resist over and over again any efforts to actually help people live better lives, now complain that we are running out of money therefore we need to cut any spending that would even help them survive. No way. The problem is not how just much money this country spends. The problem is who and what we spend it on.

Regardless what someone thinks about the case of Jordan Neely, the NYPD using this kind of aggressive force on peaceful protesters is unacceptable. hellgatenyc.com/the-nypd-is-…

This is huge! A new Fox News Poll finds most voters favor the following proposals: -- Requiring criminal background checks on all gun buyers (87%) -- Improving enforcement of existing gun laws (81%) -- Raising the legal age to buy a gun to 21 (81%) -- Requiring mental health checks on gun buyers (80%) -- Allowing police to take guns from those considered a danger to themselves or others (80%) -- Requiring a 30-day waiting period for all gun purchases (77%)

Franklin Roosevelt wanted an Economic Bill of Rights. It’s time to bring such a plan back to life.

One in four Americans live with medical debt. 18 million Americans cannot afford to fulfill prescriptions given them by their doctors. 68,000 people a year die of lack of healthcare. 500,000 medical bankruptcies a year. But health insurers spent $141 billion on stock buybacks, leeching off people’s despair. This tyranny is going to end soon. #Medicare4All
(1/6) LATEST: Health insurers spent nearly $141 billion buying back their own shares of stock from 2007-2022 to benefit their top execs and Wall Street investors while premiums and deductibles have skyrocketed for millions of Americans. Here's how we got here:

Should our next president be chosen by the size of their advertising budget & the the level of skill of their PR team? OR by their ability to EARN the vote by sharing their vision for our country in an open debate with their fellow candidates? #debatesaredemocracy

The issues in a campaign like mine are issues that a vast majority of Americans agree with. I don’t stand for those issues because I know we’ll win. I stand for them because I know they’re important. No candidate has a guarantee that they’ll win, or that they’ll lose. The point is to just keep pushing. I agree with Cenk Uygur when he said, “Somebody is going to break through.” And that’s enough, just knowing that. If we push hard enough, somebody is going to break through…

True.
UK and Japan have very tight gun control. We have almost none. They have no mass shootings, we average more than one a day. Our gun deaths average about 300 times UK's and about 600 times Japan's. Saying gun control doesn't work is either brazen lying or complete ignorance.
