The thing about NFL players kneeling during anthem is this: in a way it’s a sign of respect, a message that “we can do better.” To tell players if they don’t want to stand they can stay off the field, is to force them to show disrespect when that wasn’t even what they were doing.

To me, kneeling emphatically IS a sign of respect - in terms of country and in terms of peaceful dissent.
