The US spends .02% of our GDP on arts funding compared to much much more spent by other Western democracies. This is the sign of a society in decline, and the kind of thing we need to change! Time to say it and to mean it. google.com/amp/s/www.alterne…

A major problem both in the funding arena and also in education and appreciation. Artists interpret the current state of culture and in many cases predict our future.

There is a theory that it is really not the proper function of the government to promote any arts. If people want arts, they should pay for it with their own money. If an artist produces works that appeal to the "public", then they will happily spend their own money on it.

Of course it’s a theory. Just a bad one. It’s the notion that the market should control everything. The opposite theory is that there are some things that do not necessarily drive profit but which nevertheless uplift the human spirit or are simply the right thing to do.

This is not new. Our public investment in the arts has always been tiny compared to European countries. And the NEA and NEH, plus PBS are all relatively recent. It’s cultural: we have popular culture and regard high culture as elitist vs much W European’s culture is “high.”

U ignore the elephant in the room! A society in decline is open borders crowd allowing unskilled Illegal Aliens flooding in, imposing undue burdens on country. Cost of supporting unabated flood of Illegals,($115 BILLION), would b well spent otherwise! fairus.org/issue/publication…

This has been ongoing since the Bush era.

You are so right-in countries like Czech Republic, Germany or Denmark the regional radio stations even have their own symphonic and jazz orchestras and there are grants available for many artists... And only the best art gets the funding, the process is quite rigorous....
