If a woman owns her own voice without apology, she is likely to be seen by some as grandiose or arrogant. That is the kind of subtle, internalized misogyny that all of us - women as well as men – need to be aware of.

And her literal voice is attacked. Part of my job is to express my opinion on tv and those who don’t agree with me often take a shot at the sound of my lady voice (a voice that has been paid for voiceovers & is welcome on public radio)

I remember @ThisAmerLife's segment a few years ago on "vocal fry" and how listeners would write to complain about young women's style-of-speaking on the show. To me, it's because "vocal fry" has a casual, unapologetic tone. Confident without trying. A sin to see in a woman.

I think the key is for us to stand up for each other when we see it done. We need sisterhood to be proactive and courageous.
