The ascendance of an authoritarian President is a direct consequence of our failure to teach generations of Americans real civics and history. If you don’t learn the Bill of Rights, you don’t know to be appalled when it’s under attack.

This is also true. Apropos failures, Can any Trump supporter or anyone else explain: 1. Why is Trump choosing to fail in his duty to enforce Russia sanctions, ordered by members of both parties? 2. How is this not a violation of his oath of office?

An Authoritarian would have raised taxes so that the govt could take more of its citizens money, not pass huge tax cut legislation. Would also create 100’s of more regulations instead of getting rid of them (so govt could keep control) Lastly, would have kept net neutrality.
As a teacher, I will scarcely disagree, but the rise to authority of an ignorant, self-serving, malign, narcissistic populist demagogue, while enabled by civic ignorance was driven principally, IMO by austerity, social exclusion, and an absence of effective political resistance.

1930’s politics are the name of the game in 2018 America. Citizens United was the key to making it happen. The Business Plot of 1933 failed. The Business Plot of 2016 did not. Google “steve bannon 1930” & “steve bannon fourth turning”. It’s all there in plain sight.
Yep, good government & political science can be combined for hs. History has been pushed aside for years. Need teachers who love these subjects to teach them and not have them taught in 5th grade but HS
Your right, its taught but many times not very enthusiastically Been there, seen ir in several school districts

Ignorance, fear and complacency: three biggest threats to democracy.
