Actually, the scarecrow represented the farmers, the tin man was the factory workers, and the cowardly lion was William Jennings Bryan, the wizard was McKinley (with JP Morgan behind the curtain). The battle was over a silver standard of 16 oz's to 1 OZ of gold..........and toto was a puppy.

Do you realize that much of the dysfunction Baum was analogizing was a direct result of the initiation of corporate personhood in 1886? Thus the brainless scarecrow, representing hapless Kansas, unable to reign in corporate excess in the manner that other states had in previous decades. Baum didn’t realize that Kansas was not stupid, but that the very ground under our feet had moved, because of corporate personhood, causing systemic dysfunction. And our beloved media, already controlled (for the most part) by the oligarchy, didn’t bother to inform us

I too have considered our current situation very similar to the metaphor embodied in Wizard of Oz, particularly the curtain that we cannot see clearly behind but is becoming increasingly more opaque to those who look in the right place.

and what we really want is... the gold standard? Isn't that supposed to be the symbolism of the "Yellow Brick Road" I'm not sure this translates to the modern era as seamlessly as you think...
