It’s time to end America’s War on Drugs. Initiated in 1971, we have spent $1 trillion and it has only exacerbated the problem. 1/4

In the 1970s there were 300,000 people in US prisons; today there are 2.3 million. Almost half of all federal prisoners are nonviolent drug offenders. 2/4

We should treat drugs not as a criminal issue but as a health issue (such as in nations like Portugal.) For a fraction of the $100 billion we spend a year on the War on Drugs, we could pay for a world-class network of recovery options that actually help people get sober. 3/4

As someone who has been in recovery for 30+ years, I love this idea! I've seen firsthand the destruction caused by treating addicts like criminals when they just desperately needed treatment. Thank you Marianne Williamson for having the courage to address this for what it is.

The only way to end the war on drugs is Legalization. This is my favorite and the most vital part of your drug policy:

Or get people the proper mental health medications & support so that they don't need to struggle with the self-medicating people have to figure out on their own to feel ok

Why can’t “we” just end the drug war and replace it with nothing? It’s not like the government is suddenly going to become competent. We’ve already seen what happens when the government stops persecuting something and decides to “help.” It’s called the black family.

You're 32 years too late. samhsa.gov/find-help/nationa… SAMHSA founded 1992, is getting $10.8B in FY2024. What's your next idea that's already been tried, and failed?
